The good, the bad, and the ugly compared with the VIP211K and use in mobile environments
I have a love hate relationship with this receiver. I had to read tons of reviews before deciding on this receiver, and I will put everything I learned both through lots of research and first hand experience into one place to hopefully save someone some time.
Dish VIP211z HD receiver
Very good ;piece of hardware. Only issue is that it is a ;pain to get Dish to authorize it. The unit software keeps asking for a internet connection, but it does not work very well, keeps on saying that it could not handshake with Dish. Had to call Dish with the unit ID to get them to send an authorization signal via satellite, which took several tries as they did not do it right, but finally got someone on the line that knew what they were doing and the authorization went very quick. You only need the internet connection if ordering pay-per-view stuff, which I do not do anyway, so I do not have it connected to the internet.
Dish on this
I bought two of these units for a second home. I did use the services of a professional installer because I wanted the dish antenna permanently installed high on a two story house and I don’t deal well with heights anymore. I did observe the installation and set up process with Dish and it was simple and straight forward. The quality of the receiver is very good and I am very satisfied with the picture quality. It will cost $7.00 more per month for each receiver but for what I was paying $26.00 for basic cable, buying these units was a financial no-brainer. I also receive a lot more channels with my current subscription.
Great reveiver, I have several.
This is a great receiver, I have several. Easy to set up. Just plug it into your dish antenna and run the check switch program. Once it finds the satellites make sure to save then it will download the menu. This is after you activate it of course.
It arrive quickly and appeared in good shape. However
Using this receiver for our motorhome. It arrive quickly and appeared in good shape. However, when I had Dish hook me up I was told the smart card that was included with the system was the wrong one for the unit. It would have cost me $50 to replace the card through Dish but since I pay for maintenance it didn’t cost anything. Once the new card arrived and was installed started a string of phone calls with Dish. I never seemed to get hold of anyone who knew why I didn’t appear to be getting a signal. In the end they all came to the wrong conclusions about what was wrong. There turned out to be nothing wrong except in the procedure I was using to connect to the satellites. I figured out the correct procedure, with no help from Dish, and have been fine ever since.
Easy to set up
This thing works well. Easy to set up, no glitches of any kind and it has performed very well in the few months I’ve owned it.
Continue to have issues with losing channels on the guide. Especially locals. History channel has never come in. Multiple calls to DISH for reconnects and still don’t have History channel. First few days we reset and unplugged so many times I told DISH I needed a switch. We are using a KING Tailgator with a clear view to the south. Not sure where the blame lies.
Give some, take some
I had a 211k and thought this would be a good upgrade, not!!! I use my tailgater almost every day in several different states. The 211z finds satellite’s faster than the 211k but, the picture freezes a lot when watching shows. The guide has to be updated manually after the signal is received. I have not checked into the warranty or return policy yet, that is coming soon because I don’t like the skipping screen when I’m watching shows. I will probably just get another 211k which I liked much more than the upgrade.
DOES NOT HAVE INTERACTIVE WEATHER!
used in motorhome for Dish and KVH dome. NOTE; Be aware that the 211Z does NOT allow interactive weather!!!! We had to have this feature when travelling. Fortunately we had a 211K in the house and switched so that we could get the interactive weather.

love that I got it at a great price and that it performs exactly as it should. Makes travelling in our RV so much nicer. It is small in size so it fits in our space very nicely. Easy set up.
