Very Nice System, One Complaint, But Recommend
Bought this to replace our 10 yr. old 5 Disk DVD/VHS Recorder AM/FM Stereo Home Theater System after it started acting up and not opening the DVD trays (different brand). We have had this new Samsung for a little over a month. This new 2015 model works great, newest technology, 3D / Smart Blu-ray Home system with FM receiver. Better cost option than buying a Smart BD Player plus a separate Sound Bar. This up converts DVDs to give a great picture, almost don’t have to spend the extra money to rent a BD disk, if you have a 42” TV as we do. It was easy to set-up connection to our home Wi-Fi. Make sure you check for and update the Firmware on the system. We had one update on ours already. The small speakers produce a really great sound for a home system in this price range. The wireless rear speakers are not 100% wireless. You have to plug the rear surround speaker wires into a 110v powered wireless box. Accordingly, if you want those speakers mounted on a wall, as we do, you will see the wires, and be limited to the spacing and placement distance from the 110v powered box. The biggest Dislike I have about this system is that I think Samsung made a design mistake by using Proprietary speaker wire Plugs for connection of the speakers to the main and surround speakers rear unit. They should have used speaker wire spring terminal connectors as they used on all of the speakers – Why use half one type connection & half a different type connection? The spring terminal wire connections are very easy to use – you have to use them anyway on the speakers! This design totally eliminates the use of heavier gauge better wires (included wires are very thin), unless you cut & splice the included wires! This also restricts the distance you can place the speakers from the main unit (wire size / gauge too small) plus the proprietary plugs on one end. Our rear surround speakers were placed on two sides of an open arch / wall span, so the design eliminates the use of my hidden wires for the rear speakers! According, we can’t place the new ones there now. Overall I feel this is a good system, would recommend, not sorry I purchased, but just be aware of the above speaker wire complaints that I have.
Fills a limited need very well.
For the money, this is an excellent system. I give it 5 stars for doing a very good job at what it was designed for.
Good system for people a reasonable price.
Has worked great for me so far. I can crank it up in the house with volume left to go and still here my music blaring in every room while I am cleaning. The surround sound is awesome while watching movies and the wireless rear speaker unit has worked flawlessly. Just so you know though the rear speakers are actually wired to the wireless unit it really just eliminates the cord from the rear speakers to the blu-ray player. I have had only good experiences with these style of units and the one I am replacing was a regent dvd player from 2001 and the disc stopped reading. All in all super happy with it and performs much better than my old one.
Purchased this to replace an older Samsung home theater system …
Purchased this to replace an older Samsung home theater system that bit the dust. My only complaint is that I am not fond of the wireless rear speakers. The unit claims they are connected but I do not think I get the surround sound that I got from my old system which had hard wired rear speakers.
Samsung Delivers the Sight and Sound!
This system delivers clean, crisp sound. Easy to set up. The DVD Player connected to the wifi with no issues. Delivers good quality surround sound. Could use a stronger bass response but other than that I give it 5 stars. A great bargain.
Great system for a great price.
Works great with my new Samsung 70″ Smart Tv!! Install only took about 30 minutes. Sound setup took a little bit longer but that is only because I am very picky about my sound. I played with the equalizer and rear speakers for a good 30 minutes before getting the sound just right.
Works great, excellent product
Works great, excellent product. I wish it would get a little louder or maybe my hearing is just getting worse with age.
DLNA Mirroring gets Audio only No Video
DLNA mirroring gets audio but no video on my Win10 PC using MS Edge to cast. Calling Samsung support is a total waste of time. There is no HDMI input, only an HDMI out to your TV, so you cannot connect your cable box to the HT-J5500W using HDMI cable. Other that that, it does sound good and plays DVDs well. Limited online options. You cannot specify a specific URL, only the canned ones like NetFlix, YouTube.
